Shano is a self-taught artist who studied art history at California State University of Northridge, as well as the University of Utah. I learned the most from the only two instructive art classes that I completed, which were two semesters of fashion drawing at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Sherman Oaks, California. I believe that this entitles me to still consider myself a self-taught Outsider artist.Ê Inspired mostly by Klimt, Chagall, Marc, Hopper, Erte, and Lempicka, as well as Art Deco fashion illustrators. She paints in an eclectic style of what can best be described as Modern Folk Art. Being a painter, she believes that she has been given the artistic freedom to recreate herself in every individual piece of art, each piece being its own unique expression with a preference for bold, high contrast figurative pieces. The How & the When In 1989 Shano tried her hand at painting with acrylic paints, and decided that painting wasn't her forte and therefore switched back to drawing after a handful of unsuccessful paintings. Then again in September of 2000 she decided to give painting another go, and has been painting almost daily ever since.ÊI knew I had it in me, I just wasn't able to get it on to canvas. I was determined and wouldn't let myself get discouraged. I now see things emerge on canvas that I didn't know I had in me. Painting has become something that I need to do just as much as eating, breathing, or sleeping. |
